Despite wind
and rain, the US contingency of Vic Wunderle, Mike Quayle, Pete Carney, Timm Hines, David Ontell,
and Joy Fahrenkrog came home successfully with 23 medals. The 7th
Juan Enrique Barrios Cup was held in the beautiful rolling hills of Salinas, Puerto
Rico June 6th-12th at the Puerto Rican Olympic Training Center. The archery event was part of the Puerto Rican Olympic Festival.
Seven countries were represented, Puerto Rico, USA, Ecuador, Panama, Mexico,
Dominican Republic, and El Salvador.
Individually,
Vic Wunderle put in the most notable performance winning 5 golds in the 70m, 50m, 30m distances, as well as the overall FITA,
the Olympic Round. He won a silver at 90m.
Mike Quayle took home 2 silvers in the Olympic Round and the 30m distance, as well as 3 bronzes at 50m, 70m and the
overall FITA. Pete Carney opened up the tournament well with a gold at 90m, then
won 3 silvers at 70m, 50m, and the overall FITA. He also won a bronze at 30m. By the end of the tournament the US
men had only given up two individual medals to another country.
Joy Fahrenkrog
nearly swept the women’s recurve division individual medals, winning 5 golds at 60m, 50m, 30m, the overall FITA, and
the Olympic Round. She also won the bronze at 70m.
In the team rounds,
The US team of Vic Wunderle, Mike Quale, Timm Hines, and David Ontell beat Ecuador
in the gold medal match. Puerto Rico took home
the silver.
