Here are some things you might not know about Joy...
The following are questions that have been asked of Joy while she has been teaching archery clinics and giving
speeches around the country. More questions will be added as they are asked either via email (aim4athens@yahoo.com) or in person at clinics and appearances... stay tuned!
Q: Who is/are the most famous person/people (sports person or other) you have met and how?
A: One of my dad's closest friends is pretty well known in this country and he probably would qualify under
a sports person since he used to be the quarterback for the Buffalo Bills as well as politician since he ran with Dole for
the Vice Presidency and that is Jack Kemp. I grew up calling him "Uncle Jack." He has introduced me to some pretty
famous people as well, one being Warren Miller. You know the guy who does all the really cool ski movies... I actually
got to ski with him once because of Jack. Another famous person I know (who is becoming more and more popular) is Woody
Paige from ESPN's "Cold Pizza" and "Around the Horn." Woody was even one of my sponsors last year and in my opinion
he always beats Skip out during 1st and 10.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: When I was a kid my favorite movie was "Gone with the Wind." I was a big fan of AMC and used
to watch old movies when I was sick... but the rule in my house when I was sick was that I couldn't watch movies
until school was out for the day. My other favorite movies include Rudy, Miracle on Ice, the Cutting Edge and Coach
Carter (can you see a theme?). I am a huge fan of Adam Sandler's stuff as well.
Q: What kind of music do you like?
A: I love Christian Contemporary and Country. My favorite artists growing up were Michael W. Smith and
Garth
Brooks. When I lived in Colorado
I listened to KYGO and now I listen to KLOVE. I really like KLOVE because they don't play commercials.
Q: Have you read any good books lately?
A: I am a big fan of sports books, but I have one big problem... I start them but never finish them. However,
I did finish "Gold in the Water" by P.H. Mullen and it is definitely one of the best sports books out there. I'm in
the middle of "Namath" right now and I'm re-reading "The Purpose Driven Life." I just started "Bob Knight: The Unauthorized
Biography" and I just finished "Lance Armstrong: Its Not About The Bike."
Q: Do you have a favorite tv show?
A: I don't have time to watch a lot of tv but... my favorite tv show is Law & Order. If you
ever talk to any of my friends they'll tell you that I actually can't even carry on a conversation while the show is
on.
Q: Is there an inspirational quote that you live by?
A: When I played basketball (yes... believe it or not I did!), I used to dribble the
ball on the free throw line to the bible verse "you-can-do-all-things-through-Christ-who-strengthens-you." Although
I value the verse, I never once made the basket. Good thing I'm not trying out for the Olympic basketball team!
I did win the most inspirational player award though, so I guess I made up for my terrible skills. I also like Mark
19:27 "With God all things are possible" (except for when it comes to me making baskets).
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: Well... I don't usually have spare time, but when I do I typically crash and go into this zombie mode where
I can't even clean my dishes. Those are the days that I take an extra long nap to get my energy back as well as watch
L&O on TBS.
Q: What kind of food do you like?
A: Since I live at the Olympic Training Center now, I get all my food from the dinning hall. Jimmy and
the rest of the cooking staff do an excellent job. My favorite food at the training center is of course the soft chocolate
chip cookies. I love the tuna salad too and they do a great job with the chicken.
Q: Who is your favorite Olympic athlete and besides archery what is your favorite Olympic sport to watch?
A: Man that is a tough one, I have so many!!! I think the list goes something like this... (in no
particular order) Steve Redgrave (Rowing from the GB team), Michelle Kwan (Ice Skating), Sasha Cohen (Ice Skating), Sarah
Hughes (Ice Skating), Rulon Gardner (Greco-Roman Wrestling), Paula Radclife (Distance Running from the GB team) the
list goes on and on and on... but I think the important thing is that all of these people never gave up and they all want
to be the best in their field. My favorite sports to watch in the Summer Olympics have to be swimming & gymnastics.
I had a blast in Athens watching Michael Phelps win gold over
and over again and I was there when the US Women won the team silver in gymnastics, it is incredible how high they jump on
the floor exercises! Believe it or not, trampoline is pretty amazing to watch as well. My favorite winter sport
is undoubtedly Skeleton. When those guys are going down the track, I'm glued to the tv.
Q: What professional sport do you follow and do you have a favorite team or athlete?
A: Again, that is a tough question... I'm into all of it... my dad was a huge football fan so I grew up
watching the CU Buff games every Saturday. Since I lived in Boston
for a couple of years, I'm a huge Red Sox and Pats fan. I really admire Adam Vinatieri though b/c of his ability
to deliver under pressure. I'll never forget the Oakland/Pats game in the middle of a snow storm when his kicked the
field goal to win the game in the last few seconds. That was awesome! The football team that I follow the most
is the San Diego Chargers and I've been a fan of them since I was a baby. I don't follow basketball very much but I
do like the Celtics. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vejay Singh are the golfers I love to watch the most. Of
course, now I also follow Nick Faldo since I met him and his wife Dori during the International. I could go on and on...
but I'll stop there... well, ok, I like to watch the pro skateboarders on tv too... some of the stuff they are doing is insane!!
Bucky Lasek is my favorite to watch.
